Pyro-Babies!

The children spent Thursday afternoon at their grandparents' house.  Dinner plans included the babies working with grandpa to make a homemade pizza.  The pizza was placed in the oven and the children then sat on the couch with grandma and grandpa for story time...until...

The smoke alarms went off...
And smoke billowed from the oven...
And flames came out of the bottom of the oven...

As grandma and the children looked on, grandpa used a fire extinguisher and water to put out the fire which had started in the bottom broiler drawer of the oven.  The pizza was ruined.

The background for this story is that--at grandma and grandpa's house--the children are allowed to play in the kitchen with their toys.  At some point in time prior to the pizza being baked, one or more of the babies had placed a reasonably large quantity of toys into the bottom broiler drawer of the gas oven.  When the pizza was set to bake, the flames in the bottom of the broiler area started the pile of toys on fire.

This was a pretty impressive experience for the babies because they were able to hear the smoke alarm, SEE the smoke and fire, and also notice the soot which was spread afterwards over the entire upstairs of the house. They have taken every opportunity to relate this story to others, including their nursery leaders on Sunday :o)

We are grateful that no one was harmed, and also that grandma and grandpa's kitchen and house are OK (if not a little dirty!)
